Two Games, Two Experiences

Singapore's lottery scene is dominated by two games offered through Singapore Pools: Toto and 4D. Both are legal, regulated, and widely played — but they offer very different experiences in terms of how you play, how often you can win, and how much you can potentially take home. This guide compares the two so you can decide which fits your playing style.

How Toto Works

Toto players choose 6 numbers from 1 to 49. Six winning numbers plus one bonus number are drawn. Prizes are awarded across seven groups depending on how many numbers match. The Group 1 jackpot is a rolling prize pool that grows until someone wins — meaning jackpots can reach significant sums after multiple rollovers.

Toto suits players who enjoy the excitement of chasing a potentially large, growing jackpot and are comfortable with lower odds of winning any prize.

How 4D Works

In 4D, you pick any 4-digit number from 0000 to 9999. At each draw, 23 winning numbers are drawn: 1 First Prize, 1 Second Prize, 1 Third Prize, 10 Starter Prizes, and 10 Consolation Prizes. You can bet "Big" (win if your number appears in any of the 23) or "Small" (win only if your number matches First, Second, or Third prize — but with higher payouts).

4D suits players who prefer more frequent draws, simpler number selection, and a better chance of winning smaller prizes regularly.

Prize Structure Comparison

Toto

  • Group 1 (6 numbers): Share of jackpot pool (rolls over if no winner)
  • Group 7 (3 numbers): Smallest fixed prize, most achievable
  • Jackpot minimum starts at SGD 1 million, grows with each rollover

4D

  • Big First Prize: SGD 2,000 per SGD 1 bet
  • Small First Prize: SGD 3,500 per SGD 1 bet
  • Consolation Prize: SGD 60 per SGD 1 bet (Big only)

Which Game Has Better Odds?

4D offers significantly better odds of winning something in any given draw. With 23 winning numbers drawn from 10,000 possibilities, your chance of matching a single ticket on a Big bet is roughly 1 in 435 per draw. Toto's odds of winning the jackpot (Group 1) are approximately 1 in 13.98 million for an Ordinary Entry.

However, Toto's lower-tier prizes (Groups 5–7) are more achievable, and the jackpot potential far exceeds 4D's fixed prize structure.

Which Should You Play?

  • Choose Toto if: You're drawn to big jackpots, enjoy number analysis, and don't mind longer odds.
  • Choose 4D if: You prefer simpler play, more draw opportunities per week, and better odds of smaller wins.
  • Play both if: Your budget allows — many Singapore lottery fans enjoy both games for different reasons.

Final Verdict

Neither game is objectively "better" — they serve different player preferences. Toto is the game of big dreams; 4D is the game of regular small wins. The most important factor in either case is playing responsibly with a set budget you're comfortable with.
